Web Summit: Day 2

Web Summit Day 2

November 3rd 2015

Coming Home

I’m coming home bitches.

Our editor is having too much fun without me! Here’s his article on Web Summit Day 2:

So we hit the Web Summit yesterday…and what a day it was. The smell of creation and hope was in the air again. It reminded me of strolling up the Royal Mile in Edinburgh Fringe this year. Except the costumes were more expensive yesterday and flyers had been substituted for Mobile Phone applications. It was gas.

Some of the apps photographed below were just amazing. Jaunt, StudyinBudapest, Dioblo and Alpha etc etc etc are all featured and were really impressive. I was like a kid in a candy shop.

Also present were your big guns: Kickstarter, Facebook and Google were all brilliant to me because they knew I was shooting for the Tiger. They welcomed me backstage or in their tent and allowed me access to their ambassadors who included Heaslip, The Kearney’s and the brilliant boxers Michael Conlon.

I met friends and strangers, ex lovers and possible future lovers but everyone was there for one reason: Curiousity…

Well curiouslity and publicity…

Enough of the babble. Kids these days like photo graphs.

So here they are: Have fun out there,

Much Love,

Now I’m just going to talk about my personal experience. I’m not going to mention Hotels, or traffic or money or governments. It’s not really our style to focus on the bad, negative media side of things.

I will say one thing however, RTE are pretty smart. I’ve worked for them enough times Jeez to know when they are saying bad publicity is still publicity and you are all sharing and commenting on their video right.

If they wanted Sharon to interview hard and cause a negative reaction to her publicity then they will have force fed her the questions or given her a hard line to take. She’s getting a hard enough time of it from the backlash and sure she wouldn’t let Darragh speak at points…but that’s his general demeanour and education shining through.

Plus it’s not like the Web Summit won’t be back in 2017. Everyone loves a good Britney comeback right? Lessons have to be learned and we all get a trip to Lisbon next year right? Win win for all.

The Web Summit Presentation 2015

Camera man Love this shot

I’m going to try and not ramble on too much with words in these posts…

Well maybe after I get back from the summit I’ll go into more details. Here are the photos and a brief description of what was spoken about.

Firstly the incredible stage was designed by a Mick Cullinan. It’s amazing right? This is him and Sophie. Fair play lad.

Mick Cullinan

The evening was presented by Ger Gilroy who did tried to relax the guests while still asking the right questions

Presenter

1.) The right to vote from abroad was extremely interesting. There is a huge campaign to allow the emmigrants, who have been forced out of Ireland, fopr whatever reason to vote cross channel. A postal vote has been enshrined in many other nations legislation. Why shouldn’t it be here. This writer, and all of TPJ support this change.

2.) Eva was, without a doubt the star of the whole night. She was awesome. She had trouble getting into her Primary school. Her Dad set up the campaign to rectify this.

4.) Guy Rolnik presented a very interesting talk on freedom of expression and media output and restriction, something that this writer knows all too well about

6.) Start Up Potential…

This was the one I was looking forward to the most and impressed me the least unfortunately. The advice given was grand but it struck me as a bit selfish and unprepared which surprised me because the speakers were so well established. It certainly didn’t sync in with the whole Web Summit principle of ‘All in this together, help each other out’. Starting one’s own business is really challenging, exhausting for the most part but so rewarding when you start reaping some benefits and success. This talk was maybe just a bit flat and I’m sure the other start up presentations will be better.

‘Which start ups are you looking forward to seeing or are you excited about… ‘My own two’…Really, well that’s nice. There were interesting parts I guess and I got some nice photos so all wasn’t lost.

7.) The final panel was wonderful. They were so used to be on stage at this stage that they began the panel discussion talking about Ms. Byrne’s tattoo and continued from there. I shot a nice video which I’lll post below too that gives hope to all start ups out there on this island.

Have a great week you guys, have fun out there. Geek Well and see ye around,

Much Love,

The Web Summit 2015

So Ireland’s biggest web, tech and start-up convention officially starts today and I for one am delighted about that.

The Web Summit has been held in Ireland for the passed 5 years and began as a meeting of maybe 500 companies in Dublin. Now it is still run by Ci by legends such as Paddy Cosgrave who emailed me personally last night saying I was more than welcome along to the presentation called The Future of Ireland.

I rocked up at 5.30pm and the show was starting at 7pm so I had ample opportunity to take some snaps and feel the aura of creation and hope starting to build around Simmonscourt.

It was all very exciting and the next few days are going to be massive. Be prepared, if you are an Irish reader of this site, your news feeds are going to be jam packed with attendees posts and information.

It’s going to be a wonderful few days. Delighted I’m here soaking up the monetary geek culture. It’s what we all are at the end of the day. I don’t want to call this summit the Comic-Con of Irish techies…But it’s pretty damn close…possibly better if last night was anything to go by.

Someone told me the other day that I wouldn’t be able to make a 3 to 5 minute film in under 4 hours… I laughed in their face and came out with this!

Spoiler alert: I stab the Orange

I know the film is an ugly child of mine but I loved making it and proving them wrong.

I think it’s probably so bad that it’s good, but I love him nonetheless.

Dublin City Marathon 2015

Dublin City Marathon

October 26th 2015

Dublin Marathon took place on the Bank Holiday Monday, the 26th of October 2015. Ordinarily Dublin has life and vibrancy bursting from its epicentre. It’s constantly filled with business and creativity and everyone feels a sense of home there, even if they are from outside the Pale. However I had never seen it like this before. Safe to say that the 26th was a SAVAGE day…in a good way!

I can easily say this was one of my favourite shoots that I’ve ever been on. TPJ loves the joy and hard work and each photo below shows just that!

Dublin was awash with brilliant, talented people who had all trained hard themselves for this day for no personal financial reward and had the support of their friends and family the whole way along the roads. The  nooks and crannies of the 42 kilometre stretch of inner city South and North side were filled with the prideful sweat of their loved ones.

I won’t say much more about the day. Photos speak a thousand words right?

Please feel free to share, copy or paste any of the below photos. If you know anyone who was in them, please tell them and congratulate them on a job well done.

People gave their hearts to the city on Monday and it rewarded them with the feeling they received at the finish line. If you did it for Charity even more fair play to you!

They are all on Facebook too here: please save the site with your friends if you can:

Congrats to all the organisers and event managers and helpers, you did a super job and the day went off spectacularly.

Congrats to all the runners and suppoerters that lined the streets. If I didn’t catch you in a shot, I apologise…It wasn’t for the want of trying.

Enjoy the snaps,

TPJ x
