The Small Earth and the Small People

The Earth vs D’Unbelievables

So the earth is tiny…. We are a blip in the cosmosphere, a spec of dust floating inside in a vast mever ending mountain range, we are probably not even considered when God is thinking about new stuff to do up there in heaven.

All he knows is that the stuff he’s conjuring up shouldn’t wipe us out. He has us protected. He has given us our own means of survival and we’re doing alright with it. Gravity and water and a few gases which mix well together to keep us perfect. It’s a miracle that we are here and have conscious thought, but now that we’re here let’s have the craic!

Here are two videos: One is about how small we are as a collective planet and how difficult it would be for other planets to find us and the second is about how we create things here and how small people make us laugh.

It’s just comedy gold! Please enjoy!

and how we use our talents together for good

http://youtu.be/ZEwVpWFyy3M

Funny, isn’t it? Let’s keep on doing that stuff and having less of the auld wars and shite. Laughter is the best medicine. I really hope we don’t destroy each other and the only place we have to call home.

Have a nice weekend,

It’s Been One Of Those Days

It’s Been One of Those Days

Ballet Back Arm

It’s been one of those days when even phoning a stranger for a quick conversation cheered me up.

Dropped my bag and the only person offering to help me is a fully packed Mum who already has too much to do

It’s been one of those days where I’d go back to say “thank you” to a coffee server a second time…just to make sure she saw me as a thankful, nice person and heard that I meant every word. She might have needed a thank you too.

It’s been one of those days when even lifting my head took too much effort and hurt my heart. Where the world spun far too fast for my thoughts to keep up, and I felt dizzy. Dizzy partly for trying to help everyone elses troubles and partly because it seems You always demand more of my best. Can’t you just be happy with me and my efforts. Can’t you just say thank you like the pretty coffee lady.

All I’m thinking of is your forever happiness and how best to serve your smile.

When you already know that you are harder to track than the clouds that pass my bed. Catching clouds is so impossible and a cold forms over my hands the more I try.

It’s been one of those days when the crowded places on earth left me hanging scared of someone seeing through my smile. My smile is more often than not fully real…which is important. One of those days when I could hear my thoughts banging and bashing like footsteps that don’t exist outside my door and while I was asleep, I dreamt of you fighting the monsters under your bed. Why the fuck are you in my sleep too. Go away and get out of my dreams if you don’t want to be in my real world.

So my resting place of sleep and slumber, of protection in covers has been stained by lumber, to corrections in my lovers

“Bed” has turned into a place of regrets…and that hurts my heart more than my head.

Leaving things behind, easy access to sadness and much more of these dark corners to find. Maybe its just the change outside, the early hours and the feeling of losing.

The coldness creeping in before you even begin.

Fuck it, It’s just been one of those days…

Tomorrow will come and I’ll call you again.

Hi pet, it’s me…are you there? That’s what I’ll say…

Or will maybe something else…hmmm

Daylight Robbery – Mill Theatre Dundrum *****

Daylight Robbery – Ofegus Productions

Mill Theatre, Dundrum October 26 – 31st 2015

Daylight Robbery

We arrived to the Mill Theatre out near the cinema in Dundrum Shopping Centre a little bit after 14.30. Thankfully the show had gone up a little bit late so we didn’t miss any of the opening plot which in a kids show is essential to understand the journey. It’s such a lovely theatre and it was nearly a sold out. Given that it’s a 200 seater venue, my hopes were high for Ofegus’s latest production of Daylight Robbery.

As I was late, my friend, the honourable Paul Fox had been waiting by himself for my arrival. He was sitting there in solitary in a leather jacket at the back of a kids show so quickly whistled for my company as soon as I entered.

‘Thank the sweet Lord you’re here man. I looked like a right creep here by meself! I sat down. He seemed really happy for company – can’t imagine why.

So we took in the setting and picture that the directors has created for us and waited to be whisked away to the land of Enchantasia. The stage had lovely lighting and set to it. The music was bright or eery depending on which of the characters were present and the props were everywhere and sparkling. Ahhhh how I missed the Ofegus shows.

We then turned our attention to the story line. It was set in a magical world full of Royalty and assonance. This world, if you have seen any of the company’s other shows, includes a Forbidden Forest, a Chasm of Catastrophes, Witches called Wendy and Winona and lots of other alliterative spells and tricks to keep the imagination of the plot going and the dreams of the child alive and kicking thourghout.

In yesterday’s play, the blasted sun unfortunately had been stolen by the baddies and a daring rescue hunt to retrieve it had to ensue. In other words, A child’s dream adventure had begun and Paul and I were allowed get transported and accompany them there too…

Each child, of which there was maybe 80, recognised that their help was needed to rescue the stolen sun. They shouted helpful words at the actors on stage when they required a hand. Everyone, both young and old, was loving it.

We became familiar with the characters quite easily. Anne Doyle was the lovely albeit stern Princess Angelica. Susan Barrett played Wily Witch and Starika Stormsword. Hilary Bowen-Walsh was the strong Incandesence and Lyra Lightening-Spear. Caoimhe Mulcahy was the beautiful Fairy Christmas and Lady Ember-Glow.

Niamh Hogan, in her ninth show, played Wendy Witch with her naughty broomy to accompany her and she also played Scorch, the fighting minion. Sean Doyle played the cowardly and camp Prince Marmaduke and Duke Percival and Stephen Gorman reprised his role as General Strike. Finally Shane Robinson was cast as the hero General Amnesty and also Singe. And they all did a super job. We weren’t sure if there was a referendum under current but as with the vote, it passed off quite easily.

Ooooh

Three guys and hiding fairy

High Kick

Paul whispered casually to me, ‘Man don’t fall in love with the fairy’ and sure enough the young fairy dressed in white did resemble my cup of tea. She was a winged fairy who was proficient in spells, a self defense expert, and she pronounces Rainbows exactly the way it should be. She also smashed Hogan in a fight and I know of know mortal who has ever done that given she is an All-Ireland judo chop expert!

Paul, as it happens, even received one of her kicks to the head. It was very funny.

Mulcahy won the hearts of the audience with a friendly, unintimidating smile, a good delivery presence and a strong listening prowess which are all vital for kids show.

I did try to remain objective.

The whole cast though were amazing together and worked well as an ensemble. They are led by the legend that is Niamh Hogan who seemingly demands high kicks and dancing in every rehearsal. I think the pints after shows were missing though as they seemed hesitant to indulge in flaws.

Special mention also goes to Anne Doyle purely for her delivery of the beautiful line: ‘Go away, I never want to see you again’, when the cowardly Prince didn’t show up for her when he needed to. Given it was a simple but important mistake, it showed how she ran the place and how much she demanded of her citizens. It was such a simple yet killer line, that it cut him straight to the core.

Rather than being exiled and deported to Elba, he decided to give up his cowardly ways and become an Royal Airforce officer for the Princess. Now that’s girl power at its finest, and it was a terribly good lesson for any young girl or lady to learn. Boys need to be controlled.

Now I don’t want to give away the ending but rest assured the sun is still shining in the sky today.

Long Shot

Ofegus Theatre company itself is run incredibly well by Niamh Hogan and her very young and pretty morher Leslie Hogan.

This is their ninth show in five years (I may be wrong) which includes a five play repertoire including Daylight Robbery, The Rainbows End, The Ice Witch, The Pirates of something beginning with P amongst others…

They premiered in the 10 Days in Dublin Festival in 2011 and brought that show to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Since then they have gone from strength to strength and now Dublin actors are dying to be included in the cast. Children’s Theatre done well is very difficult to beat from a rewardance output perspective for an actors.

The cast remained on stage after the show and took photos with the smaller audience members should they so wish. They obviously did.

It’s really lovely seeing their reactions to having a photo with the Princes’, Princesses and Witches and Generals who had now become their idols. I even spotted the fairy letting an extroverted young lady pose with her wand! How nice to see.

Kids after

Fairy Christmas and kids

Niamh and Princess

It’s a Five Star show from me. It’s thought-proking, creative, wild and wonderful to watch.

It keeps the kids mesmerized at every moment and they really get into the story and that is what a great kids show should always do.

There’s dancing, fighting and beautiful costumes and a great story to keep attention. In other words there’s something for everyone in it. I would highly recommend this show.

Congratulations to the cast and best of luck with the rest of the run. I hope you finally tour the rest of the paleless, regional Ireland soon.

Much Love,

TPJ x

Dublin City Marathon 2015

Dublin City Marathon 2015

We’re running the marathon. Sure feck it why not now that we’re here. It’s absolutely great craic out here too in the rain. I swear, it’s really helping with the heat that your body produces and it cleans the sweat from your face when you’re running.

The support on the both sides of the road is amazing. Signs, banners, claps and whistles. Dublin, You’re looking well and Ireland, you’re a beautiful place today with many beautiful people.

Must get off the phone. I’m very sweaty and starting to struggle. Can you ‘Hit the Wall’ after 6 miles?

Because I have, Sh*t buzz.

The IFTAS 2015: Part 2

The Irish Film and Television Awards 2015

Part 2

Mr. Gay Byrne
Mr. Gay Byrne

And so it hit about 6.20pm and Derek on the door told me I had about 20 minutes to get ready before the bell rang, so I popped out to the car, swapped the Canon for the phone and stripped off the cap and t-shirt in favour of an auld 70’s tux and scarf to look cool and hip like all the other attendees.

The scarf couldn’t have been a worse choice.

On the way in Tom the security man was having a chat with the O’Carroll clan. It’s funny the way these things work, the amount of press shouting away at Brendan for a photo and all they’d have to do is go around the side, say hello and ask politely for a photo. I’m going to treasure this one because it was a lovely moment for the three of us. Danny hugged Brendan on his achievement. They were nervous so we spoke a little then I jetted off to the red.

image

That feckin scarf though! What a bad choice.

So in we walk, I chat to Dermot again on the door and onto the red carpet we go.

Now these things aren’t my cup of tea at all. I’m pretty lucky I’m small and inconspicuous. I also haven’t worked in Ireland for the passed 5 years or so, so the tv and cameras didn’t do the roaring in my face stuff or shouting for attention but I still felt odd being there.

I quickly found a few ‘soon-to-be’ friends and had the craic as much as we could while commenting how ridiculous we felt. I knew I was covering the event too so I brought my phone for some selfies and asked away. Jenny Dixon was gorgeous and Ronan chatted away about his new album which comes out in February. Twas nice to meet them.

It turned out to be a lovely walk to be honest. Nice and calm, got the job done and walked through. The cameras had got their hit and miss dress shots at that stage so they weren’t really bothered by us.

On a side note: What a horrible thing to do by the way, who’s dress was awful and who’s wasn’t. Go way and get a life for yourselves if it’s your job…slagging off a person who’s spent ages getting ready and is there purely to support her team, her production or her friends. She doesn’t need your approval any way so be nice and go home.

Anyways in we go to the room and it’s beautiful. The Hilton is done out in her nines. Lots of crystal and Newbridge forks and chandelier sticky uppy things on what I can only assume we’re the nominee tables. We also got Mac gift bags which were lovely too and I have my sisters Christmas present sorted now… Sound Mac ye legends.

Table 6 became home for the evening… And what a table it turned out to be. Dya know one of those parties you go to alone and end up friends with everyone. Partly because people are nice and introduce themselves and partly because you don’t want to be the saddo in the corner who’s miserable and lonely… Well that was us… So table 6 became a powerhouse of craic and emotion. We even challenged Maria Walsh’s table 23 to a dance off later in the evening. She was right to refuse cuz they would have been whupped out the gate.

The awards started and people won and lost, came second, third and fourth. Loads of other media forums will tell you the results so I don’t need to bother. This is a long ass post as it is. Red Rock, 50 ways to Kill your Mammy and Mrs Browns Boys all won and were predicted. Congrats to all.

The highlight of the evening for me was Brendan O’Carroll getting the lifetime achievement award in front of his peers.

image

‘Someone asked me on the way in what my bucket list is,’ he told the crowd as he smiled down at us with glassy eyes, and then he listed out his kids names, their jobs and successes and how he was thrilled that the show was so well received… ‘My bucket list is complete’.

It was just so inspiring. That a hard grafter with an innate talent for comedy gold can still be as passionate and ambitious about his work and creations 40 years after he began them. Mrs Browns Boys is 25 years old itself! Now that’s commitment and follow through.

I guess it hit me nicely because I’ve been travelling for the last 4 years in a job that looked great but wasn’t personally enjoyable. We hit the west end, travelled, made people very happy but I missed the Irish passion for work and the craic after as one.

The IFTAS were basically our pint together after a long weeks work, the Friday scoop with colleagues after you’ve put in an honest months work and every person shows up and has the craic together.

Everyone in the arts in Ireland works together at some point, that’s just how it is. Everyone is valuable so there’s a level of respect that you must treat everyone with as all play an important role in a production and you will, undoubtedly, work with them again. And you may work together again in different capacities.

The arts in Ireland are so badly funded too (given we keep giving the silly bankers our money) and so many people have to have Brendan’s self belief and ambition, that the level of talent and show coming out of this country is incredible. Everyone pushes hard and well and honestly.

I’ll put it this way: I saw Frank, St. Patrick’s Day, In Bruge, Amber, Red Rock, Fair City, the Guard, Vikings, Game of Thrones all on foreign shores and I thought Jesus, this West End malarkey is a load of shite, I should be back working with that lot. My agent was happy when I told her.

It’s just such a culture of production values with super people at every level that are rivalling the finest of big budget productions. But one can see that in our finest exports like Day Lewis or Dearbhla Walsh or Robbie Sheehan. Farrell, Fricker and FAssbender and sure the list could go on.

It was a lovely evening. I’m terribly glad I went and had the privilege of meeting people who graft every day.

Some craic he’s having.

So For three years I’ve been writing for and as TPJ x, this is one of my first articles under my own name. If the Tiger is with me, he subs in. It keeps a bit of anonymity and spice in it and it’s great bloody craic. It is weird writing as myself though. Suppose I should do it more but I don’t like it. I get worried about the readers opinion. If any comments offend or photos unflatter, please accept my apologies in advance. I thought ye looked great.

The photos are available for use by all attendees and their teams. Unfortunately journalists you guys can’t use these without the Tigers permission as they’re copyrighted. Email is at the bottom of the site.
